A bold Folk Art carving of an Irish Red Setter constructed from three pieces of beech pegged together and showing age related shrinkage on the original red/brown paint. This piece has huge charm, with stylised chip carving to simulate the coat and the large ears and tail typical of the breed. Irish Red Setters are the oldest of the Setter group believed to have been developed from old Spaniels and a Scottish Setter to use for hunting. The earliest Red Setters had some black or white markings, but the distinctive solid red coat was developed by the Earl of Enniskillen in the mid 19th century. Irish, circa 1865.
