19th Century Camphorwood sailor's chest with a naive painting of a sailing ship to the inside of the lid. The pair of rope handles, or 'Beckets' attached with a carved hard wood cleat demonstrate the intricate macrame typical of the folk art done by sailors at the time. It is interesting to see that the plinth at the bottom of the box is slightly boat shaped to make it easier to drag along the deck. Camphorwood, often used in military furniture, may have been employed owing to the fact it repels insects. English, circa 1865.
