Mirrors came into general use in the late 17th century when it became possible to create mercury plates, often produced at Vauxhall. There plates we made by floating mouton mercury over the backs of glass – a highly toxic and dangerous occupation! The makers gradually became more and more clever and produced larger and larger plates.

Large early mirrors are often split in two because they did not have the technology to make large plates.
