An outstanding domino box containing a bone domino set and decorated with twelve small painted panels under glass. The exquisite paintings on the top of the box show an English couple of the time, the man in a bicorn hat and a red coat to show his officer status while his wife has a hat with ostrich feathers and a high waisted dress typical of the Regency period. Above two floral urns are depicted a couple from the classical past, perhaps Anthony and Cleopatra. The three panels to each side portray classical idylls with churches and castles, urns of flowers and landscapes all surrounded by bone decoration. These pieces were made by French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic period to sell to the British market. French Prisoner of War, circa 1810.

A very decorative four-fold screen, now hung as a painting, of an Edwardian day at the races, based on Derby day. This colourful piece is full of activity, the horses and jockeys are flat out, the place is packed with race-goers, whilst in the foreground a pickpocket is at work. The free flowing sketchy style of the painter gives a great sense of movement. On the left hand side of the screen is a tiered stand very similar to that designed by E. W Trendall circa 1830 for Epsom racecourse.

From the height of the age of steam this marvellous 1930’s Lines Brothers steam engine was the toy of choice of every boy of the time. Of wood construction with the original red and black livery of the LMS ( London Midland and Scottish) Railway which ran non-stop trains to Glasgow to rival LNER (London North East Railway)’s Flying Scotsman train to Edinburgh. The train is roughly based on the Princess Coronation class of locomotive, which held the world speed record of 114 mph in 1937. Lines Brothers eventually became Triang. English, circa 1937.

Anyone who knows East Anglia will be familiar with the large skies that this painting portrays so well. Born in County Durham in 1938, Trowell studied at the Sunderland College of Art and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools where he received the Landseer Silver Medal for painting and the Bronze Medal for Drawing, as well as the Sir James Knott travelling scholarship. Trowell is recognised as one of the country’s foremost racing artists, while his landscapes and portraits are equally sought after. The appeal of his images lies in their spirit and vitality, and in the way they recreate the atmosphere, colour and light of each scene. He employs different mediums to dramatic effect but his landscapes tend to be in oil, like this one, and are poignantly evocative. English, late 20th century.
