Denzil Grant, who has 35 years’ experience, is a graduate of West Dean College, with a BADA Diploma in Furniture Restoration and a City and Guilds in cabinet making. It was also there that he met his wife, Nicky, who was doing Tapestry Restoration.
His workshops offer a complete, professional restoration and conservation service using traditional craftsmanship. His client list includes the Oxbridge colleges, museums, large country houses, and many of the country’s top dealers.
Denzil specialises in cabinet work, colouring, French polishing and wax finishes and, where possible, uses period hand tools preserving the integrity of the piece. In addition, he undertakes bespoke furniture commissions including specialist and painted finishes and marbling.
The art of good restoration is to take a piece in a poor state and transform it into the best possible condition – we are noted for achieving authentic colour and surface bringing out the beauty, and patina – in such a way that it should appear as if it has never been touched and is simply in exceptional condition.
For Denzil, antiques restoration is one of the most enjoyable aspects of his business. He is joined in the workshop by Ross Bennett who has served his apprenticeship with Denzil and is a graduate of Suffolk New College (NVQ2 in Cabinet making).
