Medieval Corbel

Medieval Corbel

A Baltic pine Medieval roof corbel in the form of an angel holding a shield, which bears a Coat of Arms in the form of a tree – probably the Arms of a local family who supported the church. The face of the angel appears to have been modelled on a local, say a tavern keeper or a blacksmith – serious faces were usually reserved for Apostles and Saints showing the sense of fun that Medieval carvers often had. Swedish, circa 1560.
